Which Wiesn suits which guest?
Oktoberfest has several faces. The first three days are political and star-studded — this is where you'll find CEOs, actors and international guests in the celebrity boxes at Käfer and Kuffler. The middle weekend is international, packed and loud — ideal for first-timers seeking the full spectacle. The final week grows calmer, more local and more relaxed — with the best tables and the most authentic atmosphere. Dirndl and Lederhosen — the right choice for gentlemen
Genuine traditional dress from a Munich tailor (Lodenfrey, Angermaier, Wallach) is the only style-safe choice. Avoid cheap costume-shop Lederhosen from online retailers — they're spotted in seconds. A classic pair of Lederhosen in deer or goat leather, a white traditional shirt, a grey or brown Joppe jacket and Haferl shoes form the basis. Anyone without their own outfit can hire a complete set at Angermaier, including fitting. Investment: €200–400 to hire, €1,500–3,500 to buy a set that lasts a lifetime.
Tent recommendations by occasion
Käferzelt: the most exclusive tent, restricted access, many reservations go through Käfer catering clients. Intimate atmosphere, affluent guests. — Kuffler's Weinzelt: the only Wiesn tent focused on wine, more elegant and calmer. — Schützen-Festzelt: Bavarian tradition with an upmarket crowd, frequently politics and business. — Marstall: modern, elaborately decorated, good food. — Hofbräu-Zelt: international and very crowded, better suited to first-time visitors. — Augustiner: local and traditional, said to serve the best beer by Munich standards. For a companion, we recommend Käfer, Kuffler or Schützen.
Reservations — the honest truth
Reservations for the popular tents sell out by March or April of the previous year. Anyone enquiring in summer stands practically no chance at the top tents — unless via catering clients, regular-guest status, or a Munich hotel with a Wiesn allocation (Bayerischer Hof, Mandarin Oriental, Vier Jahreszeiten). Plan B for short-notice bookings: tables at Marstall or the Käfer Wiesn-Schänke, a lunchtime reservation instead of the evening, or a Wiesn brunch at a Munich luxury hotel instead of a tent visit itself.
Wiesn etiquette — the unwritten rules
Beer is drunk with a "Prost", and eye contact is mandatory — skipping it is considered an affront. Wine only at the Weinzelt or Kuffler's. Steins stay inside the tent. Standing on the bench is allowed and part of the fun; standing on the table only during "Ein Prosit". Tips go directly to the server in cash, 10–15 per cent. Cash is essential — cards are not accepted in many tents. Photos on your smartphone, yes, but never of strangers' tables without asking.
Getting there, hotels and logistics
Theresienwiese is 5 minutes from the main train station via U4/U5 — driving during the Wiesn is a mistake. Hotels in the immediate vicinity (Sofitel Bayerpost, Le Méridien, Eurostars Grand Central) are fully booked from February onward. A realistic alternative: Mandarin Oriental, Bayerischer Hof, Rosewood — 10–15 minutes on foot or a short taxi ride away, while still offering the standard you expect. A limousine service from the hotel is advisable: during peak Wiesn hours, pedestrians wait 10+ minutes at every crossing around Theresienwiese.
